(KNSI) – An air quality alert returns for mid-week due to elevated ozone levels.
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency says most of the state, roughly from Bemidji south to the Iowa border, will be in the orange category from noon Tuesday until 9:00 p.m. Thursday. With an air quality index in that range, sensitive groups will begin to have problems.
The MPCA says ground-level ozone will be elevated during the afternoon hours each day, driven by sunny skies, hot temperatures, and low humidity. Those conditions help spark pollutants like nitrogen oxide and other organic compounds, which mix together to form ozone.
The agency encourages people who are sensitive to poor air conditions to limit outdoor activities. It could aggravate heart and lung disease, trigger asthma and other respiratory conditions, and inflame cardiovascular conditions.
Symptoms to be on the lookout for include chest pain, coughing, fatigue, shortness of breath, and wheezing.
