(KNSI) – The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of a former deputy who died in a motorcycle accident Saturday afternoon.

According to the Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office, 51-year-old Dave Scherping was riding his motorcycle south on County Road 5 when he approached the intersection of County Road 4. A driver in a pickup truck heading north made a left turn in front of Scherping. He collided with the truck and was thrown from the bike. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck, a 57-year-old man from Becker, was not hurt.

According to a Facebook post on Saturday evening, Scherping was a Morrison County deputy and a K9 handler for several years. He is also the father of the current K9 handler, Deputy Austin Scherping.
