(KNSI) – The St. Cloud Morning Optimist Club focuses on Juneteenth during this month’s “Lessons in Leadership” discussion.
Buddy King from the Higher Works Collaborative will be the speaker. The theme of his talk will be about using the holiday to promote racial harmony.
St. Cloud has celebrated Juneteenth for 26 years, well before many people knew what it was. The day marks when the last slaves in southern Texas were told about the Emancipation Proclamation and officially freed. The order was given by the United States Army on June 19th, 1865, in Galveston.
It became a federal holiday in 2021 and the Minnesota legislature is recognizing it for the first time this year.
The program begins at noon on Wednesday, June 7th, at the Waite Park Pizza Ranch. Lunch is available via Dutch treat, so there is no pre-registration required. Food will be first served at noon with the discussion starting at 12:15. The session ends with the Optimist Creed at 12:55 and adjournment at 1:00 p.m.
