(KNSI) — Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, joined by lawmakers, advocates and former Governor Jesse Ventura, is signing the bill to legalize adult use of cannabis on Tuesday.

The bill allows residents 21 and over to use and grow marijuana, have up to two pounds of marijuana at home, and have up to two ounces in their possession. Use is only for at home and does not allow for public consumption.

Dispensaries selling it to people are still about 18 months away from being opened. Minnesota’s IT department is working on creating a licensing system. The state is also creating an Office of Cannabis Management, which will be paid for through a 10% sales tax.

Beverages containing hemp-derived THC will remain legal and available at several establishments. The drinks can only contain 5mg of THC per serving, and label requirements limit containers to two servings.

Adult use of cannabis becomes legal on August 1st. Seltzers containing THC will now be sold in liquor stores. That takes effect immediately.
