(KNSI) — If fishing is on your list of things to do this coming weekend, the bass catch and keep season opens on Saturday.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says spring is a great time to cast for bass. Largemouth and smallmouth bass can be easier to catch in spring and early summer as they spend their time in shallower waters. As temps rise, bass like to hide in deep water around rocks or in heavy cover like lilypads and weed lines that offer protection and a good hiding spot for prey. Yes, you may get weeds on your lure, but as the DNR says, it’s “part of the price of catching big bass.”

General possession limits say anglers can have six combined largemouth or smallmouth bass.

There are exemptions for several lakes including Mille Lacs Lake which has special fishing regulations that differ from statewide or border water regulations. All bass greater than 17 inches must be immediately released with a limit of three in combination. Smallmouth harvest ends September 10th. Largemouth harvest ends February 25th.
