(KNSI) — U.S. House Minority Whip Tom Emmer says if the U.S. defaults on its debt, it will be on President Joe Biden.

Emmer accuses the president of employing avoidance tactics so he doesn’t have to deal with a potential debt ceiling crisis. “For more than 100 days, Speaker [Kevin] McCarthy has called on Joe Biden to negotiate a responsible debt limit plan. What has Biden done instead? He gaslights the American people and then flees to Japan.”

He is referring to Biden’s visit to the Asian nation as part of the G7 Summit.

“House Republicans passed an American plan that responsibly raises the debt ceiling while reigning in the Democrats’ out of control spending.”

Congressional Democrats say the talks and negotiations this week were productive. Items put forth called for a spending freeze, slashing spending by more than $1 trillion over a decade. They also looked at rescinding unspent Covid relief funds and a two-year cap on spending. Republicans say they want the country to spend less than it did in 2022 and have turned up their noses at a spending freeze to keep it where it is for 2023.

At a press conference Wednesday, Speaker McCarthy says the two sides aren’t there yet, but said a deal could be struck before the June 1st deadline, which is when U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen says the country could be out of cash.
