Air Quality Alert Issued for Tuesday

(KNSI) — An air quality alert has been issued for the northern half of Minnesota due to smoke drifting south from wildfires in Canada.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency says the Air Quality Index is expected to reach the Orange or Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups category. A strong cold front moved south overnight and pulled the smoke down. Northerly winds will push the smoke as far south as central Minnesota by Tuesday afternoon. Counties included in the alert are Chisago, Douglas, Isanti, Kanabec, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Pope, Stevens, and Todd. This area includes Alexandria, Little Falls, and Mille Lacs.

Fine particle pollution carried by the winds will make breathing difficult for people with lung disease (including asthma), heart disease, children and older adults. They may experience negative health effects and are asked to limit prolonged or heavy exertion and keep their windows shut to avoid getting smoke inside.
