(KNSI) – Flags in Minnesota are flying at half-staff after eight shoppers at a Texas outlet mall were gunned down over the weekend.

The proclamation issued by Governor Tim Walz lasts through sunset on Thursday. The order only applies to state and public buildings, but businesses and homeowners are encouraged to do the same.

The shooter in Texas has been identified as Mauricio Garcia. He was killed by police when they responded to the mass-casualty event. No motive for the killings has been released by investigators.

Walz says the actions are to help honor the victims. Flags were set at half-staff on Sunday to remember fallen firefighters. Last month, they were lowered for deputy Josh Owen who was killed in the line of duty in Pope County.
