(KNSI) – Dozens gathered in front of the steps of the Stearns County Courthouse on Thursday afternoon for the National Day of Prayer.
One of the keynote speakers was retiring Waite Park Police Chief Dave Bentrud, who credited prayer for him getting through decades in law enforcement. “My career is winding down. But after 32 years, I could not have done this job without the prayers and support from folks like you. So, thank you very much.”
He asked all police, firefighters and first responders to come up on the steps as he led a prayer for them. “We pray for their families who often bear the burden of worry and fear. Give them peace of mind and comfort knowing that you are watching over their loved ones. May we as a community recognize and appreciate the sacrifices they make to keep us safe.”
The group also prayed for homeless veterans in the area and for local businesses and nonprofits to be successful as they serve the community.
The National Day of Prayer was first observed in 1952. It’s celebrated every first Thursday in May.
