(KNSI) — The University of Minnesota Board of Regents voted unanimously to allow Governor Tim Walz and his family to move into Eastcliff while the official residence undergoes a $6 million facelift.
The proposal came after the uproar surrounding the price tag for the family to rent a mansion in Sunfish Lake owned by a wealthy Twin Cities businessman turned Republican Senate candidate. To rent that house would have cost over $17,000 a month. Eastcliff will cost $4,400 a month, a savings of more than $250,000.
The state will pay for utilities, snow removal and lawn care and arrange to pay for internet, cable, telephone, custodial and security services. The University will use rent payments to cover maintenance and operation costs for the 10,000 square foot, 20 room mansion, during the lease period. No capital costs related to Eastcliff are associated with the rent.
Walz and family will move in after U President Joan Gable leaves for her new job at the University of Pittsburgh. The lease will go through September 2024 with options to renew or extend the term through the end of 2024.
