(KNSI) – The Sartell High School team made the playoff round at the FIRST Robotics Championship this past weekend in Houston, Texas, in its debut on the sport’s biggest stage.

The squad started slow, losing three of its first four qualification matches. It rattled off five victories in its last six bouts to finish 32nd out of 78 teams in the Johnson Division.

Coach Ryan Swanson tells KNSI News they were the 10th team from their field to be selected for the playoffs, earlier than any other group from Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. They will compete next at the state championship in early May.

The region is celebrating another bit of good news. Swanson says that St. Cloud has been selected as a competition site for next season. The event will take place at the River’s Edge Convention Center. Albany and Becker also had teams at the FIRST Championship held from the 19th to the 22nd, showcasing how much talent is here.

No date for the local tournament has been set yet.
