(KNSI) — The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for the Mississippi River at St. Cloud, affecting Sherburne, Stearns and Wright Counties.
Officials say they are seeing river and lake levels go up and flooding throughout the area, specifically Stearns County. Flooding can happen through ice jams, rapid snow melt, and city storm sewers getting overwhelmed.
Stearns County is asking people to report flooding they encounter by posting photos to social media and using the hashtag #stearnsweather.
Use extreme caution in or near flood waters, and driving through flooded areas is not recommended because you never know the condition of the road underneath the water. As little as six inches of water is enough to float a small car.
The flood warning is in effect until further notice.
Other areas along the Mississippi are also under flood warnings, as are the Red River and the St. Croix at Stillwater. Emergency managers in those areas are bracing for high water as hundreds of thousands of sandbags have been filled and placed along the banks.
