(KNSI) – Minnesota Governor Tim Walz signed House File 45 into law Thursday, which allows for deferred prosecution of veterans if their crime stems from a service-related disability.

Any eligible military member who pled guilty or has been found guilty could take part in the program. The case would then be dismissed after probation is completed. The bill tasks courts with determining whether a veteran qualifies or not. It applies for several misdemeanor, gross misdemeanor, and low-level felony offenses.

The Minnesota legislature originally passed the measure in 2021. Examples of conditions that would apply include post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injuries, or sexual abuse.
