(KNSI) – The Albany High School Boys’ Basketball Team lived up to being the decided favorite Tuesday night in a Class AA quarterfinal matchup against Pequot Lakes.
The Huskies came in as the two-seed in the state tournament and never trailed on their way to a 69-53 win over the Patriots. Albany was powered by sophomore forward Sam Hondl. At 6’6″, Hondl is the tallest player on the court for Albany and he somehow found a way to play even bigger than that. Hondl netted eight of the first 10 points for the Huskies.
He finished with a team-high 20 points and completed the double-double thanks to 12 boards. Other significant contributors were senior shooting guard Tysen Gerads and sophomore point guard Zeke Austin. Gerads dropped 19 on the Patriots, mostly in the second half, and dished the ball for six assists. Austin racked up 13 points.
The Huskies led 27-18 at halftime, picking up the offensive efficiency after the break. A sterling second stanza shooting performance elevated the team to 52% from the floor for the full game. They connected at a 47% clip from beyond the arc and converted 75% of their free throws. Hondl’s big night accounted for a lot of that. He was 10-14 from the field, or 71.4%.
The 30-1 Huskies meet Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton in the semifinals. The game is scheduled to tip off Friday at 8:00 p.m. at the Target Center.
