(KNSI) – Governor Tim Walz signed a bill Friday ensuring free school meals for every student.
The law will provide breakfast and lunch each weekday that class is in session for students, regardless of family income. It is expected to cost hundreds of millions of dollars per year and will be paid for from state funds.
Walz says this is part of his One Minnesota agenda and its focus on families. He says, “Providing free breakfast and lunch for our students is one of the best investments we can make to lower costs, support Minnesota’s working families, and care for our young learners and the future of our state. This bill puts us one step closer to making Minnesota the best state for kids to grow up, and I am grateful to all of the legislators and advocates for making it happen.”
Walz signed the bill at Webster Elementary in Minneapolis.
