(KNSI) – The Sartell City Council approved a bid at Monday night’s meeting to build what is being called a surge tank at Lift Station #1 of its wastewater grid.

The station is the only connection point between the Sartell system and St. Cloud’s. Everything has to flow through the hub on its way to the regional treatment facility. The volume forces the lift station pumps to work hard and as they shut off, a vacuum of negative pressure forms behind the sewage and other materials being sent along. That has caused the primary main to fail multiple times in the past.

The tank would send water into the vacuum to keep it from forming completely. It will cost approximately $1.858 million and should be in service by July 2024. The bid covers the building of the prefabricated structure, relocating it to the lift station, and bringing it online.

City Engineer Scott Lange presented on the plan. He says that if Sartell continues to grow as expected over the next decade, a second surge tank can be added as the lift station is expanded to handle additional capacity.
