(KNSI) – Tucked inside the $1.9 billion Minnesota House infrastructure bills passed on Monday is a provision for a St. Cloud nonprofit.
Representative Dan Wolgamott said on the House floor the goal is to create a new family destination in the city’s downtown.
“I am so excited to vote yes for the bonding bill tonight and I am proud that I was able to include $7 million for the Great River Children’s Museum.”
When it does open, it will be located in the former Liberty Bank Building on 7th Avenue South. The 25,000-square-foot facility will have 8 permanent exhibit areas, outdoor and rooftop spaces, and more.
Wolgamott says the museum will bring people to the downtown area.
“Over 100,000 children and families will be able to come and play once we pass this bill [and] they’ve opened their doors. This is a huge win for St. Cloud kids and families.”
The bill now goes to the Senate. The upper chamber will make changes, which could potentially include stripping assistance for the museum. That is not anticipated by Representative Wolgamott.
The Great River Children’s Museum has been in the planning stages since 2012. It hopes to open in early 2024.
