(KNSI) — The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has released its 2022 Permit to Carry report, showing a decline in applications versus the last two years.
There were 70,443 applications across the state’s 87 counties and 65,257 five year permits issued. In 2021, there were 110,078 applications and 106,488 five year permits granted. In 2021, 101,897 applications were turned in, and 96,664 permits were granted. While the report shows a marked decline from the last two years, it’s still above 2019’s numbers when there were 53,310 applications and 51,404 permits issued.
Other numbers from last year show one permit was issued, but emergency expired. Permits that were issued as emergency permits are only valid for 30 days. Two emergency permits were issued for the reporting period from January 1st through December 31st, 2022. One was valid, and one was expired as of December 31st, 2022. The BCA says there were 678 rejections, 32 suspensions, no revocations, 113 voided, ten canceled, four on hold, 4,315 pending and 33 appealed.
Locally, Benton County had 664 applications and issued 581 permits. Of those applications, 398 were new, and 183 were renewed. There are 28 new applications pending and 41 applications for renewal pending. There was also one permit suspended and one that was voided.
In Sherburne County, there were 1,775 applications and 1,670 permits issued. Of those, 1,131 were new, and 539 were renewals. There were 11 total denials, one on hold, 91 pending, and two voided.
In Stearns County, there were 2,123 applications turned in and 1,974 permits granted. Of those, 1,354 were new, 620 were renewals, 27 total denials, one on hold, 119 were pending, and two were voided.
There are several reasons for denial, revocation, suspension, or voiding, including post-issuance surrenders or convictions, mental health concerns, an applicant being underage, or an undocumented immigrant.
