(KNSI) — The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory starting at 3:00 a.m. for Benton, Sherburne and Stearns Counties.
A strong storm system will bring widespread precipitation to central Minnesota overnight Monday. Forecasters say there is a 30% chance of freezing rain starting at 1:00 a.m., and the chances increase toward sunrise with an 80% chance of freezing rain by 5:00 a.m. with an 85% chance of a mixed bag of precipitation starting at 5:00 a.m. It could change to snow briefly around 8:00 a.m. before the wintery mix returns around 9:00 a.m. Chances diminish after lunch, with everything ending sometime around 2:00 p.m.
The precipitation will start as freezing rain, gradually mixing with rain and snow late Monday morning. The best chances for ice accumulation are north of Interstate 94 across central Minnesota. Ice accumulations of around a tenth of an inch are expected.
Slippery sidewalks, roads and bridges are possible. The slick conditions could impact the morning commute.
The precipitation will end from west to east and be out of the area by Monday afternoon.
