(KNSI) – Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has declared a peacetime emergency and is asking for the National Guard’s help as a possible historic winter storm barrels down on the state.

The National Weather Service says central Minnesota could get between 12 and 23 inches of snow Tuesday through Thursday afternoon. The storm will also bring winds gusts of 30 to 40 mph with wind chills as low as -11.

Officials say storms of this severity threaten lives by stranding drivers along the road, causing power outages, all straining local resources. Meteorologists say the weather could lead to the closing of roads and affect public safety.

Walz is asking the Minnesota National Guard to prepare to help with the possible rescues of drivers who get stuck in the blizzard. The order goes into effect today and will remain until February 28th.
