(KNSI) — Authorities are warning of thin ice on lakes in certain parts of the state.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says warmer weather, rain, and wind are taking a toll on some lakes.

DNR Conservation Officer Garrett Thomas says the agency does not keep track of ice thickness, which can vary within a short vicinity, so measure as you go, wear a life jacket and carry ice picks just in case you fall through.

The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office says they are urging anglers to remove their fish houses from Lake Minnetonka as soon as possible due to unpredictable ice conditions.

At least four inches of new, clear ice is needed to support a person. At least 20 inches of new, clear ice is needed to support a heavy duty truck with a wheelhouse shelter.

All ice houses in the southern two thirds of the state have to be off lakes by March 6th.
