(KNSI) — Interstate 94 in northwest Minnesota is back open after it was closed earlier Wednesday due to dangerous road conditions.

Governor Tim Walz declared a peacetime emergency and authorized the Minnesota National Guard to help stranded motorists in Clay County. Heavy snowfall and strong winds created blizzard conditions in that area.

Sergeant Jesse Grabow says Interstate 94 between Moorhead and Fergus Falls reopened around noon as several stranded vehicles were removed and roads improved. Highway 210 from Breckenridge to Fergus Falls, Highway 75 from Crookston to Perley and Highway 200 from Ada to Halstad were also closed because of high winds and blowing snow. They have also since reopened.

Snowplows, tow trucks and first responders helped with cleanup and rescues. Snow drifted around parked and stalled vehicles, some of which had been there since 9:00 Tuesday night.

“I am grateful to the members of the Minnesota National Guard for answering the call and providing immediate assistance to Minnesotans in need,” said Governor Walz. “The state stands ready to provide support, so that everyone can weather this winter storm and return safely to their homes.”
