(KNSI) — A retired nursing home worker from Paynesville is still providing care and comfort to patients even after turning in her name badge.
The CentraCare Foundation says in 2017, Elaine Niewind designed and created a dignity quilt for funeral directors to use when taking deceased patients out of the CentraCare – Paynesville Hospital’s nursing home. The hand-stitched blanket received so much positive attention from families that she was asked to make another for the hospital.
CentraCare says the quilt provides comfort and peace to the family members when leaving the facility with their loved ones.
She recently donated the new quilt, which has peaceful earth and water tones, which officials say fits in with the new hospital’s architectural “rivers, lakes and shoreline” color themes.
“I was so honored to be asked and to be able to do this,” said Elaine. “I’ve been working on it for quite a few months,” she said. “I’m really pleased with the finished look.”
Elaine cared for the nursing home’s residents and their families for 40 years.
