(KNSI) — As the price of everything goes up, wing lovers may rejoice as experts say there will be no shortage and they will cost less than in the past.

Gary Joiner with the Texas Farm Bureau says, “1.45 billion buffalo wings will be consumed over the Super Bowl weekend. That’s about 2% more than last year, and the good news for consumers? They’re actually less expensive.” That’s about 84 million more wings than last year.

The bird flu that has led to a spike in egg prices is not affecting other poultry products. Joiner says, “wholesale and retail wing prices are down almost double digits from a year ago.”

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, wholesale chicken wing prices peaked at $3.25 per pound in late May 2021, but retail prices continued to climb. At the start of the 2022 March Madness basketball tournament, the national average retail feature price (prices advertised in grocery flyers) was estimated at $4.29 per pound. Nearly a year later and just ahead of the 2023 Super Bowl and basketball tournament, the national average feature price is down nearly $1.70 per pound to $2.62.
