(KNSI) — Two officers with the Minneapolis Police Department are being hailed as heroes for helping two elderly people out of their burning home.

The fire was called in Tuesday morning just before 9:00 on the 3400 block of Bde Maka Ska Parkway. A person in the home had called to report the house was on fire. Officer Zachary Randall and officer Jamal Mitchell ran inside to help evacuate the residents before the house became completely swallowed up by the flames. Mitchell had been on the job for three days.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said in a Facebook post, “Cops are not trained to run into burning buildings. The officers ran in and put their lives on the line despite the danger, and saved two of our residents as if they were members of their own family. Today was only Mitchell’s third day on the job, and this is exemplary work by both officers. Their quick actions today were truly heroic, as they prevented this fire from being even more tragic.”
