(KNSI) – The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has fined Northern Metal Recycling in Becker $12,000.
The government agency says the company exceeded its air emission limits by 60% at its metal shredding facility. The issue was over very small particulates between 10 and 2.5 micrometers. The company also needed to meet deadlines for testing pollution emissions and submitting those results to the MPCA. Records show tests were conducted up to 35 days late, and reports were submitted to the MPCA up to 66 days late.
Along with the fine, Northern Metal must submit a performance testing plan that outlines a schedule to ensure future testing is performed on time. Install equipment to control acid gas (hydrogen sulfide), mercury, and particulate matter emissions. Perform tests to show proper operation and submit status reports to the MPCA every six months.
