(KNSI) – The Walz Administration is touting over $3 billion in proposed spending in its 2023 infrastructure plan, but Republicans say it means Minnesotans will be paying more in fees and taxes.

There are five broad themes to the budget. It will fund $650 million in roads and bridges, as well as water systems. Another $1.2 billion will go towards preserving existing assets. Maintenance makes up 38% of the overall plan, the largest single component.

$470 million is earmarked for affordable housing projects and veterans facilities. The plan is to make improvements to existing shelters for vulnerable Minnesotans.

$520 million goes to creating thriving communities, whether they are big cities or smaller towns. The Walz Administration says it wants to improve every zip code. About 40% of that would be reserved for minority and other historically excluded groups. Lastly, the plan focuses on environmental stewardship to the tune of $312 million.

Governor Walz says, “Strong infrastructure is what allows Minnesotans to live safe and healthy lives. It’s what keeps our drinking water clean, our roads and bridges safe to drive on, and our communities safe from flooding. The investments in our 2023 Infrastructure Plan will support the economic vitality of our communities, while creating thousands of good-paying jobs.”

As far as funding goes, the plan calls for $1.9 billion of General Obligation Bonds with another $1.4 billion coming from what is described as other financing. The State GOP says you will see the fees assessed for your car registration tabs soar. Party officials are predicting an increase from anywhere between 100% and 160% in the first year.
