(KNSI) — In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day today, there is no mail delivery, except for priority mail deliveries, and post offices are also closed. UPS and FedEx are making deliveries.

City, county, state, and federal offices are closed today. Parking meters are not enforced in downtown St. Cloud. Most banks are closed, including U.S. Bank, Huntington Bank, and Wells Fargo branches. Transactions made with the mobile app or online will be posted Tuesday. The majority of schools are closed on MLK Day. The Great River Regional Library system is also closed.

Most stores, malls, restaurants, movie theaters, and bowling alleys are open for business.

St. Cloud is celebrating the day with the annual MLK Breakfast and service project at the River’s Edge Convention Center from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Martin Luther King, Jr was shot to death on April 4th, 1968. A bill was introduced that same year to honor the slain civil rights leader, but opponents blocked it. Legislation to observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day was passed in 1983, and the first national observance was in 1986.
