(KNSI) – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is reminding snowmobilers to use caution during the long holiday weekend.
One of the most common problems each season is trespassing. That’s especially true when people are farther away from their homes or cabins than normal, something that can happen with extra time to explore.
Conservation Officer Alexander Birdsall says there are dangers when you leave paths that are maintained by state personnel or area snowmobiling clubs.
“There are inherent risks with riding off-trail. We count on countless volunteers to maintain and groom our trails throughout the entire state. They also clear them of potential hazards and obstacles. Riding off-trail increases the chances of striking an object that’s not seen.”
The extra day off will allow you to utilize the trails later on Saturday or Sunday, until well after the sun has set. If you want to get in a nighttime ride, the DNR says you should cap your speeds at 40 miles per hour.
Birdsall says any faster and you wind up out-running your headlights. He explains.
“By the time you perceive something, your brain cannot process a decision to react based off of it. So, you outrun your headlights. You won’t be able to have the reaction time to avoid striking the object or, worst case, another person or snowmobile.”
Riders should stay to the right, as most trails have two-way traffic. Avoid drinking and driving as well.
