(KNSI) — The St. Cloud City Council got a brief overview of a massive Highway 10/Highway 23 interchange project getting underway this spring at Monday night’s meeting.

Minnesota Department of Transportation District Three Project Development Engineer Darren Nelson tells KNSI the work will start with the westbound side. “We’re going to build Westbound 23, so traffic will be running head to head on eastbound Highway 23. We’re going to be building southbound Highway 10. It includes a new bridge, over 4th Street, [so] 4th Street will go over top of Highway 10.”

The bridge will be for pedestrian and vehicle traffic, which Nelson says will make it safer for people crossing Highway 10. The project will also include a 20-foot tall noise barrier and lowering Highway 10 ten feet.

Nelson explains that public safety and the condition of the roads are the primary reasons Minnesota zoned in on the project.

“It’s horrible out there. If you drive Highway 10 you know what kind of condition that’s in right now. Same thing for 23. Also, the pedestrian crossings on Highway 10; there’s a lot of pedestrians that cross Highway 10 with no good route right now. So by a grade separating 4th Street and Highway 10 that will provide, not only for pedestrians, but also vehicular traffic across Highway 10, safer movement.”

The project will result in multiple road closures and detours. Work should start in April and finish in the summer of 2025.
