(KNSI) — The City of Sartell says its police chief has handed in his retirement papers.
Chief Jim Hughes has been a police officer in Sartell for 32 years, starting in 1991 and has held various positions with the department, including field training officer, sergeant, and lieutenant, and was named Chief of Police 19 years ago. Before working for the Sartell PD, he also served as a patrol officer in Kasson and as interim chief in Claremont.
Chief Hughes says the Sartell Police Department has meant so much to him. “My favorite part of being with the Sartell Police Department is that we’ve remained committed to our community via outreach programs and the interactions we have with residents on a daily basis. I wish people knew all of the ‘extras’ officers do like shoveling walkways, getting a front door donated for someone in need, stopping for a quick snowball fight with youth, and many other things that go unseen. Officers aren’t looking for gratitude, it’s just the type of officers we have working at Sartell PD and I am so proud of that.”
His last day will be March 31st.
Chief Hughes is the latest chief of police to call it a career. Waite Park Police Chief Dave Bentrud will retire at the end of May. Former St. Cloud Police CHief Blair Anderson retired at the end of November.
The Sartell City Council will begin a search for Chief Hughes’s replacement in the coming weeks.
