(KNSI) – WalletHub says northern states are the best places to raise a family, and Minnesota is no exception.

The Land of 10,000 Lakes came in at number two overall, trailing just Massachusetts. Neighbor North Dakota did quite well for itself, ranking fourth.

Minnesota’s strengths included health and safety, which graded the state on factors such as water quality and air pollution, as well as infant-mortality rate and the number of pediatricians.

The state also did well on affordability, including the cost of a home, median credit score, and average family insurance premiums. It ranked in the top 13 in education and child care and family fun metrics.

Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin all made the top 20. The Northeast also ranked highly. The South and Sun Belt regions fared worst.
