(KNSI) – The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office is asking people with Apple watches and smartphones to turn off the crash alert feature on their devices when they are enjoying the great outdoors.

There has been a rash of notifications placed to the regional emergency call center recently that show an accident, fall, or other related incident occurring. When deputies responded, they could not find any evidence of a crash or someone in distress.

The devices register the shocks that occur while going down a tubing hill, for example, as a collision. False reports have also been observed at amusement parks tied to specific roller coasters, among other activities.

Oftentimes, the person is unaware of the problem as Apple sends the notifications automatically.
