(KNSI) – Google has pulled out of a proposed $600 million data center in Becker.
It would have created nearly 2,000 temporary construction jobs and 50 permanent jobs. The data center was announced in January 2019 and was viewed as a replacement of jobs and a tax base with the closing of Xcel Energy’s coal generators at the Sherco Power Plant between 2023 and 2030.
Google didn’t provide the power company with the proper filings earlier this month, so Xcel terminated its electric service agreements with Google on December 8th. Xcel Energy spokesperson Lacey Nygard in an email response to KNSI News said, “We’re disappointed that the project is not moving forward at this time, but we continue to work with companies interested in the sites and remain committed to partnering with the City of Becker to grow jobs and capital investment in central Minnesota.”
The data center would have meant big bucks for Xcel because they use a ton of electricity to operate. Google didn’t give a reason for pulling out of the project. Becker and Sherburne County both issued tax breaks on the project. The Minnesota Legislature gave $20.5 million in bonding money for infrastructure improvements to Becker’s industrial park to host the data center. Most of the work involves putting in water and sewer mains.
In the summer, Xcel and Sherco announced a substantial solar project to help replace the coal plants.
