(KNSI) – Nordic ski trails are open across Stearns County.

The Park Department says grooming machines were out for the first time this season on Monday. Maintenance is typically done on the trails as long as there is a base of at least four to six inches or a significant amount of new snow has fallen.

Stearns County has four different trail networks. Quarry Park is probably the most popular. A vehicle parking permit is required, but they have lights for late afternoon and evening runs. Everything is suitable for beginners.

Warner Lake features a North Loop, which is challenging, even for experts. Mississippi River County Park in Rice has trails that are tough enough for intermediate skill and a skate ski loop by the picnic shelter area. Neither a vehicle permit nor a ski pass is required.

Kramer Lake Wildwood County Park in St. Joseph has two classic tracks groomed, with runs both for beginners and experts. A Great Minnesota Ski Pass is required there.
