(KNSI) – Sartell-St. Stephen Schools will host a Truth in Taxation hearing Monday night at 6:00 at the high school.
The proposed levy increase is 2.67%, which equals roughly $321,780. Public education property taxes are determined through a four-step process. First, the county assessor determines the market value for each property, then the state legislature sets a formula for how the burden is split between different types of properties. Lastly, the county auditor uses the information to establish taxes per parcel.
Overall valuations are up 19.55%, which means the rate for the school district will drop substantially compared to a year ago. The City of Sartell recently voted to keep the municipal tax rate flat, which equates to around a 17.5% overall increase in property taxes collected for next year.
A regular school board meeting will follow the hearing. Sartell High School also has its Winter Concert Choir beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Note: Line changed to clarify that the 17.5% increase in Sartell property taxes is for the total collected, not a change to the tax rate.
