(KNSI) – A Husky standout on the ice will receive the ultimate honor on January 14th when his jersey is retired by the men’s hockey program.

Center Matt Cullen’s number nine uniform will hang at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center following a ceremony before a conference game against Colorado College. Cullen played for Saint Cloud State from 1995 to 1997, scoring 86 points. He was selected to the All-WCHA Rookie Team and then the All-WCHA Second Team the following year.

He went on to a 21-year NHL career with eight teams, including the Carolina Hurricanes, Minnesota Wild, and Pittsburgh Penguins. He lifted the Stanley Cup three times during his career.

The Moorhead, Minnesota native represented the country five times, including the World Juniors and World Championships. He was on the roster of the bronze-medal winning Team USA squad at the 2004 tournament, where Cullen contributed two goals and four assists.
