(KNSI) – Students, staff and family are mourning the loss of a St. Cloud Tech High School junior killed in a crash.
The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office says around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, 17-year-old Charlie Boike was headed south on 23rd Avenue in St. Augusta, about five miles south of St. Cloud when he lost control of his SUV, went into the ditch and rolled. Bystanders performed lifesaving efforts until first responders arrived. They continued CPR, but they were unsuccessful and Boike was pronounced dead at the scene.
The sheriff’s office says the roads were slippery at the time of the crash.
A GoFundMe account has been set up to help the family with funeral expenses. Charlie was a member of the St. Cloud Crush hockey team and the number one fan of the St. Cloud Norsemen.
A post on the GoFundMe page says Charlie had a huge heart and a memorable smile. Friends and the community are asked to leave a stick outside their doors Sunday night so “Charlie can play hockey with the angels.”
In a message sent to KNSI News, Superintendent Dr. Laurie Putnam said, “We mourn the tragic loss of our student, Charlie Boike. We hold his family in our hearts, as well as the Tech High School and Crush Boys’ Hockey communities. Because of our close relationships, this loss reaches throughout our entire district family.”
“Counselors and staff will be available tomorrow to support students and will continue to be available in the upcoming days.”
Funeral arrangements are pending with Miller-Carlin Funeral Home.
