(KNSI) – The United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives National Response Team is in Minneapolis to investigate a massive apartment complex fire that occurred in Minneapolis Saturday morning.

The blaze required evacuation of the structure in the 2300 block of Lyndale Avenue and resulted in $1.8 million in damage. Part of the building collapsed as a result.

Minnesota State Fire Marshal Jim Smith says, “Investigating a fire of this size is time consuming and requires an all-hands-on-deck approach. The partnership of our federal and local agencies is critical and always appreciated, especially with a fire of this magnitude.”

It is the first time in over two years that the ATF group has been deployed to the state. It was called in to look at arsons during the riots in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd, and also here in St. Cloud for the Press Bar and Parlor, which was burned down by its owner.

Special Agent in Charge William McCrary says the federal team will be operating in a supporting role, particularly given the tricky weather conditions in the Twin Cities this time of year. He notes, “Investigating fires in the winter can pose unique challenges, and the National Response Team resources can help with some of those additional winter-imposed hurdles. The team’s mission here is to collaboratively assist the Minneapolis Fire Department, the Minneapolis Police Department, and the Minnesota Department of Public Safety State Fire Marshal Division, in the determination of the cause of the fire.”
