(KNSI) — It has been almost ten years since Cold Spring Police officer Tom Decker was shot and killed in the line of duty, and a special ceremony is set for this weekend to honor his memory.

The commemoration ceremony is 1:00 p.m. at St. Boniface Parish.

Bishop Donald Kettler, Congressman Tom Emmer, former Cold Spring Police Chief Phil Jones, Representative Lisa Demuth and Senator Jeff Howe are among the featured speakers at the event, which will honor the sacrifice of officer Decker and others who have died in the line of duty have made. It is also to show support to all who serve in law enforcement.

Other honored guests include officer Decker’s family, the family of St. Joseph Police officer Brian Klinefelter, and the family of Mendota Heights Police officer Scott Patrick. Klinefelter was killed in the line of duty in January 1996. Officer Patrick was shot to death on a traffic stop in July 2014.

There will be a small reception after the program.

Officer Decker was killed while responding to a welfare check in the early morning of November 29th, 2012. One person was arrested but later released without charges. Another person of interest took his own life. No other arrests were ever made. Officials closed the case in 2018.

Decker was 31 when he died and left behind a wife and four kids.

A fundraising effort is now underway for a memorial statue. So far, $48,000 has been raised. A bridge in Cold Spring and the Cold Spring Post Office have both been renamed in his memory.
