(KNSI) – Minnesota’s rank as the top turkey-producing state was displayed at the Capitol as the state’s official Thanksgiving bird was presented.
Governor Tim Walz and St. Cloud area Senator Aric Putnam were among those who welcomed Minnesota’s Thanksgiving turkey. Putnam was recently named Chairman of the Senate Agricultural Committee.
According to officials, Minnesota has consistently ranked first in the United States for turkey production, with over 660 turkey farms raising over 40 million birds. Minnesota accounts for 18 percent of all turkeys produced in the country.
Minnesota is also home to three locally-owned turkey producers who buy from local producers. They are Jennie-O Turkey Store in Willmar, Turkey Valley Farms in Marshall and Northern Pride in Thief River Falls.
Minnesota is also home to Select Genetics, the country’s largest turkey hatchery.
