(KNSI) – The Dementia Community Action Network is hosting its fall caregivers conference on Saturday with a keynote address by Dr. Joseph Gaugler of the University of Minnesota.

The doors open at 7:30 a.m. at the Atwood Memorial Center on the campus of Saint Cloud State University. Opening remarks will be made by moderator Dr. Patrick Zook of DCAN and Gaugler will speak from 9:00 to 9:45. Gaugler says his talk will focus on three main points.

“First we’re going to just talk about the different types of dementia in real basic terms. You know, what is dementia? How is it different from Alzheimer’s? What are some of the various causes of dementia? Then the talk is going to shift to really summarizing the effects of dementia. Then the talk’s going to sum up by really taking a step back and answering the question, ‘Why does all of this really matter?'”

Gaugler stresses that the speech is targeted to the average person.

“I really tried to ensure that the content in this presentation is usable by all. It certainly is not a scientific presentation or a presentation for advanced healthcare professionals of any kind. It’s really, again, providing basic information about dementia, dementia caregiving, and then more importantly trying to put all this into context.”

Gaugler’s talk is followed by a roundtable discussion. Vendors will be on hand at booths set up around the hall. The conference ends with lunch and will be finished at 2:00 p.m.

It is free to attend but registration is encouraged. A link to do so is here.
