(KNSI) — St. Cloud businesswoman Bernie Perryman has been elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives. District 14A.

The first-time Republican candidate got 7,259 votes (50.64%)to defeat Democratic-Farmer-Labor candidate Tami Calhoun who finished with 7,060 votes (49.25%).

Representative-Elect Perryman attributed the win to focusing on everyday issues. “I kept looking at public safety. I talked about safe neighborhoods. I kept it about taxes, and I kept it about education. The values that my community wanted, and I will serve them proudly to make sure I represent them in St Paul.”

She says she will work hard for the district at the capitol. “I just really want to reach out to my community, South St Cloud, Waite Park, St. Augusta and St. Joseph. Thank you guys for believing in me and I will take your issues to St. Paul, and I’ll represent you well.”

The seat was held by Tama Theis who decided to run for the Minnesota Senate.
