(KNSI) — Stearns County is asking residents to join the nationwide effort to show support for veterans and their families.

Starting tonight and all week long, the county is illuminating its buildings in green as part of Operation Green Light. The nationwide effort is to let veterans know they are seen, appreciated, and supported. County officials say a core function of the county is to serve veterans and ensure they have access to the resources they need.

Homeowners and storefronts can show their support by changing an exterior light to a green bulb. Residents can share their participation on social media using the hashtag #OperationGreenLight.

According to a press release, Operation Green Light is a simple way to express collective appreciation for the public service of our veterans and their families. The National Association of Counties and the National Association of County Veteran Service Officers spearheaded the initiative.

While the event is focused around the week of Veterans Day, participants are encouraged to continue shining the light year-round. Veterans Day is Friday.
