(KNSI) – Deer hunters across central and southern Minnesota saw success during the opening weekend of the firearms season.
According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, hunters shot 68,628 deer on Saturday and Sunday. Around 45,000 deer were taken in zone two. The zone includes the southern and western two-thirds of Minnesota. Deer Permit Area 213 saw the most deer taken, with 2,711. The area stretches from Sauk Centre in the south to Fergus Falls in the north and includes the area north of Alexandria.
Hunters also saw success in Deer Permit Area 241, with 2,644 deer harvested. The area includes Detroit Lakes, Staples, Park Rapids and Wadena. The third most deer were taken in DPA 225, with 2,144 deer taken. The area stretches from Princeton in the south to Milaca in the north and eastward to the Minnesota-Wisconsin border.
Hunters had the least success in Deer Permit Area 117, with just four deer killed. The zone includes most of the Boundry Waters Canoe Area and Voyageurs National Park.
The firearms deer season goes until November 13th in zones two and three. Zone three is in southeastern Minnesota. The season goes until the 20th in zone one, northeastern Minnesota. The DNR says around 400,000 deer licenses have been sold this year.
