(KNSI) – District 742 is planning to launch a new online school called the Central Minnesota Virtual Academy for the fall semester of 2023.

The CMVA will be open to students already enrolled in Saint Cloud Area Schools as well as others from across the state. It will serve kids in grades 6-12. Director of Innovation and Instructional Technology Ryan Cox says the pandemic influenced the decision to open the virtual academy but it has been a long time coming.

“Historically, we’ve been talking about this as an idea [since] nearly 10 years ago when online schools were first starting but at that point it was really just an idea. What the pandemic did was it really opened up some of the possibilities of what’s available.”

It should expand options for students already enrolled in Saint Cloud Area Schools, opening the possibility of taking a mixture of online and in-person classes. Cox goes through a situation where that could make sense.

“That’s referred to by the state of Minnesota as supplemental learning. So, that’s where — maybe an example, a student has two classes that overlap. They’re offered the same time, the same day, and they’re having a hard time making the choice. If that class is offered in our online course handbook, a student could essentially take both classes if they wanted to.”

The Central Minnesota Virtual Academy was presented on at this week’s school board meeting. The entire session is available for viewing online.
