(KNSI) – The Sauk Rapids City Council voted 4-0 Monday to accept plans for an expansion of Manea’s Meats in the downtown area.

Community Development Director Todd Schultz says the extra space will serve two functions.

“They’re going to add on another approximately 12,000 square feet to their existing facility that conducts meat processing and retail services in the City of Sauk Rapids.”

Schultz says the addition will be built in a way to replicate a small business block, as required by law.

“Whenever you have a building in our downtown that is larger than 40 feet in length it’s supposed to be broken up to look like several different buildings kind of attached to each other, which can be done by varying roof height. You can have kind of bump outs in the walls and different things like that and the windows and the colors of course, as well.”

The other sticking point for the expansion was how to treat the water runoff. A new stormwater plant will be located underneath the Manea’s parking lot.
