(KNSI) — St. Cloud Area School District 742 Superintendent Dr. Laurie Putnam says she isn’t ruling out using metal detectors to keep students safe.
Last week, St. Cloud Tech High School was the subject of a school shooting threat, and a student reportedly had a gun on a McKinley-ALC school bus.
Dr. Putnam says it’s a conversation she is having with the police. “Is the solution metal detectors, maybe? Maybe not, but you know, we are looking closely at all of our options and we’re doing that alongside law enforcement.”
The school board also supports doing what’s needed to keep students safe. “The safety of our communities is our top priority. And right now, there’s nothing off the table. Our school board members have been incredibly responsive and supportive. They are right in this alongside me and our administrators.”
Putnam says she is still determining if now is the time to use metal detectors, but the root of school safety is good relationships. Putnam says that’s what led a student to speak up when they saw a student with a gun, which led to an arrest.
