(KNSI) — The St. Cloud Fire Department is holding an informational meeting this afternoon as it looks to reboot its explorer program, which was paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The meeting is open to those between the ages of 14 and 20 interested in a career in firefighting. Chief Matt Love says the explorer program it’s not just coming to a class.

“It’s very hands-on, it gets very in depth of the folks get to wear a firefighter gear and do a lot of firefighter duties to expose them as most as possible to the profession. So we’ll be talking about that a little bit. So they understand what to expect.”

The department will be getting feedback from the group to gauge how many people are interested and how much commitment they can make. Chief Love says he is a big supporter of the explorer program.

“I love the idea of building our firefighters from the community. We love having people that live in the community, protect the community. And the explore programs based out of a specific community tend to really help build that next generation. So I’m excited for the concept and kind of gauge what the community’s desire is for having it.”

The meeting starts at 4:30 p.m. at Fire Station #2.
