(KNSI) — St. Cloud’s Planning Commission approved zoning recommendations for how far businesses selling CBD and THC products will need to be from schools, parks, houses of worship and other similar businesses.

The commission recommends a distance of a quarter mile from any school or other similar business and 350 feet from a park or house of worship. St. Cloud Community Development Director Matt Glaesman explained that the difference is that “kids have to go to school. They don’t necessarily have their families with them in attendance. And then, in parks and places of worship, typically there’s a family member associated with that youth in attendance at those facilities.”

Glaesman says there are maps showing where the store will be allowed.

“We prepared maps that show on the west end commercial zoning parcels that would allow for that use. On the main corridor coming through town, on the far east side and then on the far south side of the community.”

The final decision will go before the St. Cloud City Council. It’s unclear if places currently selling CBD will be grandfathered in. KNSI News is seeking clarification on that issue.

The decision comes after St. Cloud became the first city in the state to regulate the sale of THC products. Hemp-derived THC products became legal in Minnesota in July.
